“Cholesterol: The Good and the Bad” Part 1

Cholesterol – We hear so much about it. Do you know your level? What exactly is it? To make a long story short, cholesterol is a fatty-like substance that is found in our bloodstream and cells. We need it because it helps to produce cell membranes and some hormones. The issue with it is that when too much of it builds up in our blood, it can lead to coronary heart disease and strokes. When our cholesterol levels are checked, the results are in two parts – LDL and HDL. To help transport cholesterol to our cells, substances called lipoproteins are used to do the job. LDL is low-density lipoprotein (the bad one) while HDL is high-density lipoprotein (the good one). LDL is the one that can slowly build up in our blood and cause us problems down the road. HDL is considered “good’ because high levels of it seem to help fight against heart attacks. In upcoming issues, we’ll take a closer look at things we can do to keep a balance on our cholesterol levels.

In order to ensure a proper and quality education for our children, it must be rooted in the divine laws and principles of Allah (God). He is the author of all knowledge and discipline. Therefore it is only right that we have Him at the root of the educational process. Also, there must be a strong coalition between parents, teachers and students to create a wholesome environment for our children to have a true and quality education. Parents must do their part in properly preparing their children so that teachers can do their jobs. The parents must recognize that discipline does not begin in the classroom but rather at home. This will ensure the student will have the discipline necessary to be properly educated.

As research continues to show the harmful effects of not only consuming too much sugar in our diets as well as incorporating the use of various sugar substitutes, many are discovering the benefits of the herb stevia. You*ll find it in health food stores packaged as a *dietary supplement*. It is also commonly known as sweetleaf, sweet leaf, or sugarleaf. Many find it a good alternative to using other sugar substitutes. Research has found that the herbs extracts have up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. With this, stevia has made a stand in quests for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. Give it a try.

Hot Summer Reading
This summer I read a book that will knock you out of your socks! It's called "Speak, Rwanda" and it is written by Julian Pierce. "Speak, Rwanda" is a novel about ten people living in Rwanda. These people are men, women and children; Tutsi and Hutu. All of their stories are told: Including the slaughter and massacre of innocent people. This book is thrilling, gruesome, and merciless. And even though I recommend this book to all that can stand to read it, it is not for the weak of heart. But don't take my word for it; I read it for school. The end.
In this edition of our newsletter we would like to share more valuable information of black men and women in history.

Greetings Brothers and Sisters.
Domestic Violence is a physically or emotionally harmful act between husbands and wives or between other individuals in intimate relationships or former spouses. Domestic violence also affects children who witness these acts. Depression, hopelessness, and other forms of emotional distress in infants, adolescents and teenagers are strongly associated with exposure to domestic violence. Some may have a problem coping with others when they become adults.
It is also believed that children may exhibit violence towards other children or may have a tendency to identify with the aggressor and to lose respect for the victim. We can no longer afford to allow our family structure to deteriorate because of this kind of abuse.
